PREVENT
ASSETT DEGREDATION

Polyurea Coatings are coming into wider use across many industries and the marine industry is no exception. Polyurea and the shipping industry go extremely well together. Above and below the waterline, these coatings can be very effective in protecting steel, aluminum, and fiberglass. Polyurea is excellent at providing protection from the elements and anything that qualifies as maritime, offshore, or nautic can be protected by these coatings. Because seawater contains a significant concentration of dissolved salts and is very corrosive to steel, infrastructure and assets in or near marine conditions are particularly susceptible to corrosion. Efforts to mitigate corrosion in marine conditions persist as industries develop and implement solutions to prevent asset degradation.

The shipping industry is one that continuously faces corrosion challenges stemming from marine environments, specifically seawater. The worldwide fleet is all vulnerable to corrosion-related degradation of cargo tanks, ballast tanks, decks, and hulls, which can lead to higher maintenance costs, reduced service life, and potential failures.

WHAT KIND OF CORROSION ISSUES CAN BE FOUND IN TANKERS?

The prevalent types of corrosion that we see in chemical tankers include uniform corrosion pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion as well as galvanic corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion. There is every kind of corrosion on board a vessel that you’d find in the city. Anything you can imagine that would corrode in the city can corrode on board a ship–just considerably faster and vastly worse.

No other industry deals with the same group of factors that the shipping and maritime industries do—extreme temperature changes, expansion, and contraction of materials, moisture problems, saltwater corrosion, water pressures and many many more factors. As a result, these industries set high standards for paint and coating systems. Polyurea can be applied to increase the longevity and reduce the maintenance required of decks, hulls, ballast tanks, filling floats, freezing and cooling rooms, water tanks, holding tanks, fish hold liners, bilge liners, etc.
